There is a broad consensus among practitioners and researchers alike that a communicative approach is an important component of second language education–at least some of the time. While language teachers tend to have a good grasp on how to teach, sequence, and assess using traditional approaches, many are less comfortable employing a communicative approach such as TBLT; as a result, communicative instruction is often in danger of reverting to traditional practice. The course will demonstrate ways to implement TBLT in the classroom in practical ways, while remaining true to the foundational principles of the approach.
Week 1: An overview of TBLT principles, and definition of terms
Week 2: Task-based assessment and language descriptor systems
Week 3: Designing and sequencing tasks by task complexity
Week 4: A themed task-based solution to course development
