Description
Have you already taken Scott Thornbury’s Dogme in ELT course? Wondering what to do next? Or, are you already familiar with teaching with Dogme in your classroom? This course is for you!
In this course…
- We’ll use helpful visuals, and examples from the book, to frame what it looks and feels like to teach in a way that is organic, responsive and learner-directed
- We’ll also explore how to integrate this approach in our wider teaching context – where we need to prep students for exams, meet stakeholder expectations, and demonstrate value
- We’ll reflect on our own teacher journeys using the Quadrant Map, and consider what it means to ‘mode-shift’ as teachers – so we can teach in a way that feels authentic to us and our students, without neglecting the curriculum
- Across 6 weeks, we’ll focus on six key areas, sharing our own lessons and ideas along the way via online forums and weekly live sessions with the co-founder of Dogme
Course schedule
Week One: How to work with Dogme – why the three pillars (conversation-driven, materials-light and focused on emergent language) need to work in harmony, and how this differs to traditional, linear teaching
Week Two: How to work with people – why conversation matters, what it means today, and how to include students and colleagues in our rationale
Week Three: How to work with content – why less is more when it comes to materials, and why the direction of travel (top-down or bottom-up) really counts
Week Four: How to work with emergent language – choices and strategies for effective teaching, reference and practice – and why we shouldn’t just focus on grammar
Week Five: How to work with the curriculum – what it means to ‘mode-switch’ in class, transitioning between organic and linear teaching styles, and why we need to do it in today’s classroom
Week Six: How to use Dogme intentionally – mapping our experience as teachers, understanding when it makes sense to unplug, and when to do more of it!
Live online Zoom sessions will be held four times in May on Sundays at 09:00 UTC.
Live session dates: May 24, 31 and June 7, 14, 21 and 28
Time: 09:00–10:00 UTC

This 6-week online iTDi Advanced Skills course will bring up to 30 teachers together in our user-friendly iTDi online classroom every Sunday, and then continue throughout the week –- sharing, discussing and reflecting in a private, but vibrant, online community.
As a registered participant, don’t worry if you have to miss a live class or if the time for the live sessions doesn’t work well for your time zone. You’ll receive weekly recordings of each class, full transcripts of the text chat during class, assigned readings and a PDF of the PowerPoint slides. Furthermore, the online community will certainly become a wealth of ideas and information, and will remain private and online for your use anytime in the future.
Scholarships
iTDi believes that all teachers deserve the same opportunity to improve themselves. From our experience, teachers who pay something towards a course more often make a greater effort and are more likely to complete the course. Therefore, we do encourage teachers to pay something toward the course if at all possible. We prioritize partial scholarships, but a limited number of full scholarships may also be available for this course. Please apply through our scholarship application. Scholarships will be awarded on April 24th (one month before the course begins).
