Learning to Teach (Better) with Penny Ur

In this 4-week course, world renowned educator Penny Ur will share some of the practical insights she’s learned during her 35-year teaching career from colleagues, students, the literature, and her own trial-and-error. This is a course of practical tips and guidelines. The first three sessions will deal with three general topics; Lesson planning, Classroom interaction, and Design and adaptation of learning tasks. The last, ‘Further issues’ will consist of a miscellaneous set of further tips, based largely on participant questions and issues that have come up in in forums and interactions over the previous sessions.

Topics will include:

  • giving and checking homework
  • introducing reading texts
  • adapting exercises for mixed-ability classes
  • using translation
  • correcting spoken errors
  • getting students to talk
  • making language practice interesting

Participants working toward a Certificate of Completion will be expected to spend about 20 hours on class work. This includes attending all four live sessions (live or through recordings), participating in class forum discussions and completing assigned tasks. Participants will be expected to submit a final paper comprised of their posted weekly discussion tasks (about 500 words).

In addition to the requirements for the Certificate of Completion, participants working toward a Certificate of Accomplishment will be expected to select up to five topics that were discussed in the course that were new to them and that they felt gave them interesting and useful insights, and to submit a 500-800 word paper summarizing the topics and explaining how they can contribute to their professional knowledge and skill.

In November 2017, we are proud to have Penny Ur leading her 3rd iTDi Advanced Skills Course – an exciting opportunity for teachers around the world to collaborate for a full month online with Penny and a community of enthusiastic educators.

Penny Ur brings decades of practical teaching experience, and a keen observational eye for what engages students, and even more importantly, what helps students improve their language skills. Each week Penny will present teaching tips and guidelines that address a wide range of classroom issues, all aimed at making language learning better for students and teachers.

This 4-week online iTDi Advanced Skills course will bring up to 100 teachers together in our user-friendly iTDi online classroom every Sunday, and then continue throughout the week, sharing, discussing and reflecting in a private but vibrant online community.

As a registered participant, don’t worry if you ever have to miss a class. You’ll receive weekly recordings of each class, full transcripts of the text chat during class, assigned readings and a PDF of the PowerPoint slides. Furthermore, the online community will certainly become a wealth of ideas and information, and it will remain private and online for your use anytime in the future.
