Week 1: Getting Acquainted with Apps 4 EFL: WRITING Apps

We’ll start by getting a quick tour of the Apps 4 EFL website and then jump right into Apps specifically aimed at teaching and learning the WRITING skill. I will explain specific goals of each App introduced and share feedback I’ve received from my own Apps 4 EFL community of teachers. We will try out activities so you can experience these apps as your students would.

Assignment: Test drive Essay Rank, Translation, and Manga Maker. Share feedback and ideas for using the App with your students or with different levels of students. Week 2: Exploring Apps 4 EFL: LISTENING Apps

We’ll briefly review some of the underlying principles of successfully using Apps in the classroom, then focus on the very challenging LISTENING skill. There are 5 apps which mainly focus on listening: Lyric Learner, Photo Match, Phrase Match, Pirate or Pilot, and Vid Quiz. We’ll play with these as much as time allows, always considering how to maximize their success with our own students.

Week 3: Comparing Learning Strategies with Apps 4 EFL: VOCABULARY Apps (1)

We’ll begin by discussing some of the challenges of teaching and studying vocabulary with our particular students. Then we will be introduced to the first half of the 12 vocabulary-related Apps on the website. Again, we’ll play with as many of these apps as time allows, noting and sharing advantages or disadvantages of each within our context.

Assignment: Test drive Fight the Fakes, Match Select, Dictate, Match Type, Prefix Me, and Which Witch. Share feedback and ideas for using the App with your students or with different levels of students. Reading: (5) Learning Vocabulary with Digital Flashcards


Week 4: Thinking Critically about Apps 4 EFL: VOCABULARY Apps (2)

Having become familiar with a good number of apps in Apps 4 EFL we’ll begin by having a brainstorming session about new possible apps – identifying problems that need solutions, or offering specific app ideas to the group. Then we will be introduced to the second half of the 12 vocabulary-related Apps on the website. Again, we’ll play with as many of these apps as time allows, noting and sharing advantages or disadvantages of each within our context.

Assignment: Test drive Onlist, Pop Translation, Text to Flash, Real Time, Talk Corpus, and Text Genie. Share feedback and ideas for using the App with your students or with different levels of students. Reading: (6) Comparing the efficacy of digital flashcards versus paper flashcards to improve receptive and productive L2 vocabulary

 

This 4-week online iTDi Advanced Skills course will bring up to 100 teachers together in our user-friendly iTDi online classroom every Sunday, and then continue throughout the week, sharing, discussing and reflecting in a private but vibrant online community.

As a registered participant, don’t worry if you ever have to miss a class. You’ll receive weekly recordings of each class, full transcripts of the text chat during class, assigned readings and a PDF of the PowerPoint slides. Furthermore, the online community will certainly become a wealth of ideas and information, and it will remain private and online for your use anytime in the future.

Participants working toward a Certificate of Completion will be expected to spend about 20 hours on class work. This includes attending all four live sessions (live or through recordings), participating in class forum discussions and completing assigned tasks.

About Paul:

Paul Raine has been teaching English in Japan since 2006. He has taught a vast range of different learners, from kindergartners to retired businessmen, and all ages in between. He has two bachelor’s degrees: one in Law and the other in Imaginative Writing. He obtained a Master’s degree in TEFL from the University of Birmingham in 2012, and has since presented widely at academic conferences both in Japan and abroad. He has published several research articles and two books; the first an innovative multi-path graded reader, and the second a guide for teaching English with technology. He has also developed his own website for teachers and learners of EFL (www.apps4efl.com) and maintains his own professional blog.
