Part 1: Teacher talk. Listening

Word stress is important in English. The syllables when we say a word can completely change the meaning of the word.

For example:

  • I enjoy listening to old records.
  • I plan to record my students’ presentations.

Listen to these two sentences:

Explanation:

  • The noun record is stressed on the first syllable.
  • The verb record is stressed on the second syllable.

Listen again to hear the word stress.
