Sometimes I needed to supplement what was covered in the coursebook, sometimes I wanted to take advantage of student interest in a topic, and sometimes I had to create specialized curricula.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The first materials I wrote for publication were\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">guides\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to go with coursebooks. Eventually I started writing coursebooks.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I\u2019m still learning new things about writing and materials design, but here are\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">five<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">things<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0that I think<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0are important in creating excellent ELT materials<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Have a clear purpose<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Even if you are only creating a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">worksheet<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0that will be used once in your own class, you should have a reason for using that handout rather than doing something else.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">All materials should have a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">purpose and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">fit into<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the larger context of a course curriculum, or a coursebook syllabus.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What are students supposed to learn?\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">How does it build on what they\u2019ve already learned and how does it prepare them for what will come next?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Aim for transparency<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">T<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">eachers and students<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0should know\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">what to do when they look at your materials.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If you\u2019re creating\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">worksheets<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0for your own students, this might not\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">seem very important<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0because you<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0can explain\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">anything that isn\u2019t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> clear. But what if <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">someone<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0else\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">has to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0teach<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0your class? Will your replacement be able to look at your materials and know\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">what you had in mind<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">?\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Transparency is essential i<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">f you are <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">planning to publish and sell your materials<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. The easiest way to understand th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">is<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0concept is to browse through coursebooks at a bookstore or at a conference. Flip through books asking, \u201cWhat are students supposed to do on this page?\u201d There are plenty of good materials available, so teachers aren\u2019t likely to choose books that require them to guess what the author had in mind.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Write a\u00a0<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">lesson plan or t<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">eacher\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">g<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">uide<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If you\u2019re writing materials for your own classes, this might seem unnecessary. However, writing lesson plans to go with your materials, whether they are ultimately collected in a teacher\u2019s guide or not, helps identify problems. Let\u2019s say you\u2019ve created an activity\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to have students talk about things that they have and things that they want. You might not see a problem until you write a lesson plan and realize that it might be difficult for students to differentiate between the two verbs.\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I want a new game<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I have a new game\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">are both grammatically correct, so you might end up spending your class time explaining the difference in meaning between\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">have\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">want<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0rather than practicing the language.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Get feedback<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0(and maybe an editor)<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">After you use your materials in class, make notes about what worked and what might need to be changed. When students are doing a worksheet, notice how much help they need. When I first started writing,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">an<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">electric\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">typewriter was\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">considered high tech<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.
