{"id":4430,"date":"2014-05-09T05:19:27","date_gmt":"2014-05-09T05:19:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/itdi.pro\/blog\/?p=4430"},"modified":"2014-05-09T05:19:33","modified_gmt":"2014-05-09T05:19:33","slug":"the-leadership-issue-chris","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/itdi.pro\/blog\/2014\/05\/09\/the-leadership-issue-chris\/","title":{"rendered":"The Leadership Issue &#8211; Chris"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/itdi.pro\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/ChrisMares-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Chris Mares\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-4119\" srcset=\"https:\/\/itdi.pro\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/ChrisMares-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/itdi.pro\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/ChrisMares-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/itdi.pro\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/ChrisMares-36x36.jpg 36w, https:\/\/itdi.pro\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/ChrisMares-115x115.jpg 115w, https:\/\/itdi.pro\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/ChrisMares.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"line-height:28px\">Leadership: Reminders To Myself<br \/> Chris Mares<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I will limit my post to what I have learned in my leadership position.\u00a0 The following tips are like reminders to myself.\u00a0 They didn\u2019t come to me in a blinding flash but were learnt over many years.<\/p>\n<p><b>Set the tone. <\/b>The leader sets the tone for the institution.\u00a0 Everything you are and everything you say and do will contribute to the tone of the institution you work in.\u00a0 In this way a leader sets the standard and is the model upon which others will gauge their choices.\u00a0 If you are timely, cordial, organized, and well presented, this sends a message not only about who you are, but also about what you value, and more subtly about what you expect.<\/p>\n<p><b>Be committed. <\/b>Model what you expect.\u00a0 Your commitment to your institution, colleagues, and students will earn the respect of your colleagues.<\/p>\n<p><b>Be informed. <\/b>Stay up to date.\u00a0 Read current journals, blogs, new publications.\u00a0 Attend conferences, workshops, etc.<\/p>\n<p><b>Inform. <\/b>Suggest or circulate pertinent readings\/blogs\/websites that you believe your colleagues will find interesting and useful.<\/p>\n<p><b>Be organized. <\/b>Prepare for meetings.\u00a0 Have agendas.\u00a0 Be punctual.\u00a0 Stay focused.\u00a0 Keep minutes.\u00a0 Don\u2019t just decide something will get done.\u00a0 Get names and agree on realistic timelines. \u00a0Keep records.<\/p>\n<p><b>Be consistent. <\/b>To earn the trust of others you must be consistent in your leadership.\u00a0 You must model that you will listen and that others\u2019 opinions are valued. If you say you\u2019re going to do something, do it.<\/p>\n<p><b>Be respectful.\u00a0 <\/b>Treat everyone with equal respect. Be positive in your dealings with colleagues and students.\u00a0 Give everyone the time they need.<\/p>\n<p><b>Delegate. <\/b>Don\u2019t try to do everything.\u00a0 Learn to trust others.\u00a0 Use their strengths.\u00a0 If you are a big picture person, then find the person who is the detail person and work with them, etc.<\/p>\n<p><b>Be positive. <\/b>A positive attitude is contagious.\u00a0 If you are motivated, interested, and energized, this will rub off on your colleagues.<\/p>\n<p><b>Be available. <\/b>Have set office hours or a clear protocol for holding meetings.<\/p>\n<p><b>Listen. <\/b>Being a good listener is vital.\u00a0 This doesn\u2019t just mean giving someone the time to say what he or she needs to say.\u00a0 It means actively trying to understand another\u2019s needs and wishes.<\/p>\n<p><b>Deal with problems when they come up. <\/b>Don\u2019t go into denial. Get on it.\u00a0 Problems need to be solved and the best way to do this is with the belief that all problems can be solved constructively.<\/p>\n<p><b>Follow up. <\/b>If you say you\u2019re going to do something, do it.\u00a0 If someone has come to you to discuss an issue, check in later, and see how that person is doing.<\/p>\n<p><b>Be aware of your shortcomings. <\/b>We all have shortcomings.\u00a0 No one is perfect.\u00a0 Accept your skill set for what it is and build on it.\u00a0 Work on your shortcomings consciously and deliberately.\u00a0 Own them.\u00a0 Don\u2019t be defensive.<\/p>\n<p><b>Be honest. <\/b>Be honest with yourself and with everyone else.<\/p>\n<p><b>Be realistic.\u00a0 <\/b>Setting realistic goals for yourself and others is important.\u00a0 Decide what is achievable, how it will be achieved, when it will be achieved and who is accountable.<\/p>\n<p><b>Be flexible. <\/b>There\u2019s more than one way to skin a cat.\u00a0 Listen.\u00a0 Your way may be good but someone may come up with a better way.\u00a0 It\u2019s the better way that\u2019s important.\u00a0 Park your ego, give credit where credit is due and make changes that need to be made. \u00a0It doesn\u2019t always have to be your idea.\u00a0 If it\u2019s someone else\u2019s, give that person credit.<\/p>\n<p><b>Be fair. <\/b>No favorites.\u00a0 Workloads should be fairly distributed.\u00a0 Rotate responsibilities. Make sure everyone gets opportunities to try new things.<\/p>\n<p><b>Be clear. <\/b>Leave no doubt as to what you need and what you expect.\u00a0 Give instructions carefully and clearly.\u00a0 If you have done this verbally, follow up with a written confirmation.<\/p>\n<p><b>Remain accountable.\u00a0 <\/b>Do what you say you\u2019re going to do in a timely fashion.\u00a0 Admit to any mistakes you make.\u00a0 Own them.\u00a0 Your honesty will help you gain the trust of your colleagues.\u00a0 Expectothers to remain accountable, too.<\/p>\n<p><b>To sum it all up \u2026<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Being an effective leader is neither straightforward no easy but there are rewards.
